Welding

In the Career and Technical Education Center, welding students receive training along lines of Northrop Grumman Newport News Shipbuilding and Liebherr Mining Equipment welding schools.  Students learn to set up welding equipment and do minor repairs.  They also participate in building a variety of projects and network with people in the welding field.  Welding students study: welding theory – variety of processes, shielded metal arc welding, gas metal arc welding (to include MIG, Pulse Arc, Short Arc), flux core, tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding, welding with carbon steel/stainless steel/aluminum, brazing, oxyacetylene burning, carbon arcing and plasma cutting.

Welding is a two-year program

Credits:  Three elective high school credits per academic year for course; one to two verified credits (must pass NOCTI Assessment or earn AWS Certification)

Certification:  

  • American Welding Society (AWS) Certification
  • NOCTI Welding Assessment Exam

Prerequisites:      Good attendance and behavior

Fees: 

  • $50 for club dues, hard hat, shield, gloves, earplugs, and safety glasses
  • $25 for AWS Certification (second year – optional)
  • $20 for NOCTI Assessment

Other Requirements:    Students will be required to purchase/wear appropriate clothing and safety equipment.
