New Horizons offers an 18 month Practical Nursing program. High school students take Level I of the program during their senior year. The program continues through Adult Education at New Horizons for those students who qualify for Level II. Upon successful completion of the program, students are eligible to take the licensing examination. Practical Nursing students study: fundamental and advanced nursing skills, the nursing process, nutrition and diet therapy, personal and environmental health, medical & surgical nursing - diseases and disorders, pharmacology, client care, development of individual and family, family and community health – obstetrics & pediatrics, and safety and the healthcare facility.
Practical Nursing Level One is a one-year program where no tuition is charged. However, if a student continues in the program as an adult (after graduation), then tuition payment is required.
Credits: Articulated college credit is available through Thomas Nelson Community College (18 hours), Norfolk State University (16 hours) and Tidewater Community College (14 credits). Three elective high school credits: one verified credit for Practical Nursing I (must pass Certified Nurse Aide Assessment)

Prerequisites: Good academic standing, attendance, and behavior. Students having completed the Introduction to Health Occupations Medical Assistant or Nurse Assistant
courses will be given priority for admission.
Additional Information: Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN’s) work as members of a health care team under the supervision of a physician and/or registered nurse as authorized by regulations of the State Board of Nursing. Prior to proceeding with Level II Practical Nursing, students may decide to take the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program examination to become a Certified Nurse Aide in Virginia. LPN’s must complete a state-approved practical nursing program and pass a national written examination to obtain their license, which is required in order to practice. |
