Students in grades 10-12, who are interested in working professionally with young children, may enroll in the Early Childhood Education (ECE) I and II program. Students are expected to plan and prepare developmentally appropriate activities on a daily basis and implement these activities with a team in the laboratory. This instruction will be applied in the preschool laboratory on-site. This laboratory is made up of disabled and non-disabled preschoolers, ages 2-5 years old. Topics of study in Early Childhood Education include: planning a safe/healthy learning environment, steps to advance children’s physical and intellectual development, positive ways to support children’s social and emotional development, establishing positive and productive relationships with families, strategies to manage an effective program of operation, preparation for the profession, observation and recording of children’s behavior, principles of child growth and development, and participation in practical work experiences. The work experience is for second year students who perform unpaid internships in local preschool facilities.
Early Childhood Education is a two-year program
Credits:
- Dual enrolled with Thomas Nelson Community College for six college credit hours
- Three high school elective credits per academic year for course; one to two verified credits (must pass NOCTI Assessment Exam)
Certification: NOCTI Early Childhood Education Assessment Test
Prerequisites: Good academic standing, attendance, and behavior
Fees:
- $40 for Insurance, Club Fee, and CPR Test
- $30 for NOCTI Exam (second year)
Other Requirements:
- Students will be required to purchase/wear appropriate clothing.
- Students should be proficient in reading, writing and speaking the English language.
- Students are required to have their own personal craft supplies and a Tuberculin skin test.
