Upon successful completion of the course, students are prepared to take the Commonwealth of Virginia Cosmetologist/Barber examination in order to become licensed practitioners. Students gain daily practical experience working on other students and during their second year have the opportunity to provide services to patrons in a clinical setting.  Cosmetology students can also earn SOL credit for use as elective credit upon successfully passing the NOCTI Credentialing Exam or the State Licensing Exam.  Cosmetology students study: professional ethics, safety and health, hair analysis, hair and scalp diseases/disorders, shampoos/rinses/conditioners/treatments, hair structure/scalp/hair treatments, hair cutting and shaping, anatomy and physiology, chemical restructuring, hair styling coloring and lightening, and nail/skin care procedures.

Cosmetology is a two-year program.

Credits:  Three elective high school credits, one to two verified credits for Cosmetology (must pass Cosmetology License Exam or NOCTI Assessment Exam)

Certification: 

  • Virginia State Cosmetology License
  • NOCTI Cosmetology Assessment

Prerequisites:  Good academic standing, attendance, and behavior. 

Fees:  

  • $409 for Insurance, Kit, Text, Club Fees, Supplies (Cos. I)
  • $269 for Insurance, Supplies, Kit, Manikin, Club Fee (Cos. II)

Other Requirements:    Students will be required to wear appropriate clothing.
