Center for Apprenticeship and Adult TrainingFrom The Desk Of The Director
Dear Apprentices, Sponsors and Students: The Center for Apprenticeship and Adult Training at New Horizons Regional Education Center offers approximately 120 Community, Apprenticeship, and Practical Nursing courses during three semesters per year. A primary objective of the Center is to provide quality career and technical training to enhance participant’s ability for both initial and continuing employment in an ever-changing job market. Curriculums are constantly updated to address the needs of the community, business and industry. Apprenticeship, Consists of training for occupations commonly known as skilled crafts or trades. These crafts or trades require a wide and diverse range of skills and knowledge, as well as maturity. The apprentice and the employer enter into an agreement in which the apprentice receives on-the-job training in a full-time position. He or she attends classes at the Center a minimum of two nights per week for related instruction. Most programs require three to five years of intense study. Upon completion, the apprentice acquires the status of journeymen and is awarded a certificate of completion from the Commonwealth of Virginia with the cooperation of the Virginia Apprenticeship Council. Apprenticeship courses are articulated with the Community College System. The Adult Skills Training programs offered at the Center are for those individuals who desire to learn a new skill or occupation, or to upgrade their present skills. Most courses are one semester with advanced courses offered in most areas the following semester. Specialized training and on-site courses can be organized upon request. The School of Practical Nursing has a long, rich history of producing highly qualified, professional nurses. Nursing is a profession based on scientific principals and technological changes which promote/maintain/restore the health of individuals. The School articulates with Thomas Nelson and Tidewater Community Colleges along with Norfolk State. The Youth Workforce Center provides job training, support services and follow-up services to out of school youth between the ages of 18-21. Students must meet established eligibility criteria to qualify for assistance under this program. Upon completion, students will have developed skills needed to enter and be successful in the workplace. In addition to the out of school programs, the Youth Workforce Center works with Newport News and Hampton City Schools to provide services to students needing additional assistance to complete their academic programs. Programs include employability skills training, tutoring, mentoring, and occupational skills training. I hope you find this information useful. We are dedicated to providing the best service and training possible.
